Check and Slash (DEMO)

Chess-themed hack and slash game with roguelite elements.

You will play as the Black King and must go through a randomly generated maze until you find the White King, who you need to defeat.

To progress on your journey in search of the White King, you (with your sword) will need to defeat numerous white pieces that will be guarding each room in the maze.

So, slash your path in!

Death is kind of "permanent", but some things will not be lost with it, and with each new game the path through the maze will be different from the previous one.

*Compatible with CONTROLLER*

PS.: Please note that the development of this game is not yet complete, but it is now possible to explore the maze and fight countless white pieces. Feel free to test the gameplay and any feedback is welcome!

I really liked the game, I’m a person with ADHD and I never managed to play chess for a long time because the time between one move and another took away my concentration. An action chess is perfect!!!

Thanks! I'm glad you liked it!

And that is amazing feedback! It's great to know that my game has a positive effect on someone with ADHD! =D

This game is very good, it's just not better than heavy metal
Metal is the law, The law is the metal, Metal the law is

Metal

LoL

Thanks! I'm glad you liked it!

I love chess, but this game is a completely new perspective, where the king is the master executioner.

This game has inspired me so much that I have decided that one day I will also create a game related to chess, perhaps more logical than action-oriented.

Thank you very much! I'm glad you liked it!

And even happier that it inspired you in some way!

After all, that's what games are about, right? Entertain and inspire people!

Thanks for playing!

Very neat game - well done

Thank you!!! =)

Absolutely love this! Definitely gonna wishlist. It delivers on the premise in a very satisfying way and I love the attack animation. Agree with Joerassic Park's comments. It'd also be nice to have a map and perhaps more branching paths. There are some variations of chess with special pieces (fairy chess and I can't remember the other one) so if you find you need more pieces to keep things fresh later on that'd be worth looking onto. But overall I really enjoyed this and I'm looking forward to release!!

Thanks for playing! I'm really glad you liked it!

Yeah, the lack of a map is a recurring feedback... But it's already on my to-do list to implement before the game is released!

As for more branching paths, the problem is that the maze is generated randomly, so in some runs there will be more branches, and in others fewer... But although generally the initial path is quite linear, if you advance by a certain amount of rooms, there will be enough branches to get lost for a moment!

Thanks for the tip about this chess variant (fairy chess), I didn't know about it! Pretty crazy by the way! Isn't regular chess hard enough? LoL xD

Although it's an interesting idea to add more variation to the game, I believe I'll just keep the classic chess pieces, because they're the ones most people are familiar with, and if I need more variation I'll make some kind of upgrade to the existing pieces.

One thing I'm going to do to add content to the game is create some bosses with unique mechanics throughout the maze.

Anyway, thank you very much for the feedback! Make sure to add it to your Steam wishlist! =)

I really enjoyed this game a lot and can't wait for a full-release or even early-access. I suggest adding a tutorial to the game. It took me a good while before I realized that the white pieces launch their attacks when I am in their normal chess attack pattern. Someone who doesn't play chess as much might not catch on as quick. A tutorial would also be a good place to introduce players to the blocking mechanic of the white pieces. I look forward to seeing what this project will be when it is finalized. Keep up the great work!

This is the kind of feedback that is great to read! I'm very happy that you enjoyed the game! Thanks for playing!

About the tutorial, it's something I've been thinking about for a while, I just haven't found the best approach yet... But I intend to implement it! Thank you for pointing this out, it reinforces that it is something that needs to be done!

=)

Thank you very much!

Very fun game!  I am looking forward to it being complete. It could be cool if there was like minibosses where after you beat them you get a special attack, for example knight miniboss gives you an attack that is similar to a knights attack, bishop gives a bishops attack ect. they could use more charges to be balance and they could be slightly buffed since something like a knight does not get too many attacking squares, or they could upgrade after you beat more of the same miniboss, idk random thoughts. Overall already a fun and enjoyable game!

Thanks for playing, and for this feedback! I'm glad you liked!

I'm already working on adding a few mini-bosses throughout the maze! And it's an excellent idea to receive some kind of power-ups after defeating each boss! I will definitely think about it!

Thank you!

Perhaps pick up items might be nice? Let's say, a compass to point to the nearest group of white pieces if someone gets lost. Other kinds of attacks/weapons would also be good, like a spear, having it have longer reach in exchange for no attack arc(although now that i think about it, this isn't exactly "chess-like"). As for the attacks, you could use a keybind to consume extra attack charges in exchange for a bigger/more powerful attack. Very good game though, keep up the good work!

Very nice feedback! Thank you!

Adding a compass or map is something I was already thinking about, as well as adding other types of pickup items. Very interesting idea for the keybind to exchange attack charges for a more powerful attack! I will definitely consider it! Maybe a pickup item that allows this.

I'm currently working on adding bosses with unique mechanics spread throughout the maze.

And you are right! This game is not exactly "chess-like", it is more "chess-themed".

Thanks for playing and taking the time for this feedback! I'm glad you liked it!

no problem, dude! looking forward to the finished project!

I liked the game, engaging music, interesting gameplay. Well done

Thanks! It's not finished yet, but it will be soon!

pretty good one question how does the protection thing work?

(1 edit)

Thank you!

If a white piece is on a square that is in attack range of another white piece (in chess rules) then the first piece will be protected (the shield that appears indicates when)

Thanks, I thought it might be something like that.

This game is amazing.

good idea to create this game

Thank you!!

I'm glad you like it!

I'm a solo developer from Brazil and this is my first game! Working hard to finnish it as soon as possible!

Muito legal cara.

Continue assim e você pode se tornar um grande desenvolvedor de games.

Obrigado!!
